Dimitrios Psaltis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, and is Professor of Optics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. He is currently Director of the Optics Laboratory at EPFL. He received all his academic degrees, including his Ph.D., from Carnegie Mellon University in 1977. From 2007 to 2017, he served as Dean of the School of Engineering at EPFL.
His research focuses on computational optics, holographic data storage, and artificial neural networks. His scientific interests also include imaging, holography, nonlinear optics, biophotonics, and optofluidics, an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of optics and microfluidics.
In these areas, he has published more than 400 articles in international scientific journals, authored 20 book chapters, and holds 50 patents. He has received numerous international distinctions, including the International Commission of Optics Prize for his contributions to optical information processing, the Alexander von Humboldt Prize, the Dennis Gabor Award, the Leith Medal, and the Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize.
