The Academy

The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts is Cyprus’s highest intellectual institution in the fields of the science, letters, and the arts and serves as a gathering place for the most distinguished scientists, scholars, and artists.

To promote excellence in all intellectual pursuits.

To contribute to the cultivation and advancement of the sciences, letters and the arts, thereby promoting and strengthening the country internationally through the work of scholars, scientists and artists.

• Social Responsibility: Promoting inclusivity, diversity, equality and sustainability, as well as recognising and rewarding outstanding social contributions.

The main objectives of the Academy are:

• To contribute to the intellectual advancement of Cypriot society through ongoing scientific, cultural and social initiatives.
• To cooperate and coordinate with universities, research institutes, cultural institutions, economic organisations and other bodies in promoting the prosperity and sustainable development of the country.
• To provide reliable scientific information and expert advice to the Government of Cyprus on various critical issues affecting the country.
• To strengthen the Republic of Cyprus on the international stage by showcasing the work of its scientists, scholars and artists, and fostering their collaboration with academics abroad.

The Plenary consists of all Ordinary Members of the Academy and is the Academy’s highest decision-making body.

The Senate is composed of nine (9) Ordinary Members, namely the President, the Vice-President and the Secretary General, the Chairs of the Academy’s three Classes, and one elected Ordinary Member from each Class, who is elected by the respective Class Composition of the Senate

Role of the Classes:

The Academy’s Classes function as the primary standing scientific committees in their respective fields of study. They monitor developments in their fields and submit recommendations to the Plenary to advance their work and develop related initiatives. They have autonomy in making decisions concerning their scientific fields, while these decisions are subject to approval, rejection, or referral by the Plenary for further review, without their role being superseded, even in matters concerning the election of new members.

Furthermore, the Classes recommend the election of ordinary members, propose the establishment of permanent, temporary, or special committees and research offices in their respective fields, and formulate proposals for awards, funding, workshops, and conferences, which they submit to the relevant bodies for final approval or for information purposes.
