Costas N. Papanicolas is former President of the Cyprus Institute. He is Emeritus Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois, USA. He serves as Advisor to the President of the Republic of Cyprus and as the President’s Special Envoy for Climate Change.
He holds B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has served as Researcher at the Saclay Nuclear Research Centre in France, and as Professor at the University of Illinois and the University of Athens. He directed the Institute of Accelerator Systems and Applications in Greece and the Laboratory of Physics at the University of Athens.
Professor Papanicolas has served as Chair of the Council for Educational Evaluation and Accreditation (SEKAP) of Higher Education in the Republic of Cyprus and chaired the Committee responsible for establishing the Departments of Sciences at the University of Cyprus. He has also served on the National Advisory Council for Research and Technology of the Hellenic Republic and on the Research and Innovation Council of the Republic of Cyprus.
His research work, published in leading scientific journals, spans the fields of nuclear and particle physics, medical physics and imaging technologies, accelerator physics and technology, solar energy, as well as energy and educational policy.
He is a Member of the American Physical Society (APS) and a Member of the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europaea), as well as a Member of the Silk Road Academy of Sciences (China).
For his contribution to the advancement of research and education in Cyprus, he was awarded the Medal for Outstanding Contribution to the Republic of Cyprus.
