Soteris Kalogirou is Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at the Cyprus University of Technology. Throughout his academic career, he has served in all senior academic leadership positions at the university, including Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, and Vice Rector for Finance and Development.
He obtained his PhD from the University of Glamorgan, United Kingdom, and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) in 2011. He is a Member of the European Academy of Sciences, a Founding Member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts, a Member of Academia Europaea, a Member of the International Artificial Intelligence Alliance (AIIA), a Member of the International Academy of Artificial Intelligence Sciences (AAIS), a Member of the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI), and a Member of the CORE Academy of Sciences and Humanities (FCAcad).
Professor Kalogirou has held numerous international academic appointments, including Visiting Professor at the University of Corsica (France), Visiting Research Member at London South Bank University (United Kingdom), Visiting Professor at Brunel University (United Kingdom), Adjunct Professor at the Dublin Institute of Technology (Ireland), Honorary Foreign Faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, Chair Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology (China), and Professor at the National University of Science and Technology Polytehnica Bucharest (Romania).
He is internationally recognised as a leading expert in solar energy, with particular expertise in solar collectors and solar energy systems, including power generation, photovoltaics, seawater desalination, and solar heating and cooling technologies. He has also conducted pioneering research on the application of artificial intelligence techniques for modelling and predicting the performance of energy and solar energy systems.
Professor Kalogirou has an extensive publication record, including books, book chapters, articles in leading international peer-reviewed journals, and conference proceedings. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Editor Emeritus of Renewable Energy, Honorary Editor of Energy, and is a member of the editorial boards of more than twenty-five international scientific journals.
Among his major publications are the edited volume McEvoy’s Handbook of Photovoltaics (Academic Press, Elsevier), and the books Solar Energy Engineering: Processes and Systems and Thermal Solar Desalination: Methods and Systems, both published by Academic Press (Elsevier).
In recognition of his scientific achievements, Professor Kalogirou received the World Renewable Energy Network Award in 2006 and the WREN Pioneer Award in 2008. In 2021, he was honoured with the Lifetime Research Award – STAIR (Science, Technology, Academic Innovation and Research) at the Gold Level. In 2024, he was shortlisted for the prestigious Global Energy Prize.
For a number of consecutive years, he has been included in Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% scientists. In the 2024 edition of the ranking, he was placed among the top 0.01% of scientists worldwide.
Professor Kalogirou has delivered invited lectures at more than 100 international conferences and has coordinated or participated in numerous nationally and internationally funded research projects, particularly within European research programmes.
