Elena Mouzalas, of Greek Cypriot origin, began studying piano with her mother at the age of three. She graduated from the National Conservatory of Athens (class of K. Kalomiris) with First Prize unanimously awarded by the jury. She subsequently continued her studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, supported by scholarships from the French Government, the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, and the A. G. Leventis Foundation. She graduated with a First Prize in Piano (class of P. Sancan) and a First Prize in Chamber Music (class of C. Lardé).
She was awarded Second Prize at the International Piano Competition “Gian Battista Viotti” in Vercelli, Italy (1975), and received an Honorary Diploma at the International Piano Competition “Reine Sophia” in Madrid (1977).
Professor Mouzalas has performed solo recitals in France, Belgium, Germany, the United States, Austria, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries.
She has collaborated with numerous leading orchestras, including the French Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brussels State Orchestra, the Cannes Symphony Orchestra, the Collegium Academicum of Geneva, the Orchestre Métropolitain of Montreal, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Athens State Orchestra, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Her discography includes works by Greek composers, as well as compositions by Haydn, Beethoven, Martinů, Mozart, Weber, Chopin, Schumann and other major composers.
She has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Cultural Centre in Paris and as Artistic Director of the “Manolis Kalomiris” Festival in Samos (1997–2013).
She is Professor at the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University in Corfu and served, from 2004 to 2009, as a regular member of the Governing Committee of the Ionian Islands Technological Educational Institutes.
Professor Mouzalas has been honoured by the organisation F.E.M. – France–Europe–Mediterranean, under the auspices of the French Senate, for her overall artistic and educational contribution. She was also selected among the one hundred most important Greeks through a worldwide public vote co-organised by the television networks SKAI and BBC.
In 2013 and 2014, she served as Advisor to the Ministry of Education and Culture of Greece on matters relating to music education. In 2019, she was awarded in Athens the Award of Cypriots Who Have Distinguished Themselves Abroad.
