Kyriakos Demetriou is Professor of History of Ideas and Political Philosophy at the University of Cyprus. He holds a Ph.D. from University College London (1993), specialising in the History of Ideas.
His research interests encompass the reception of Greek and Roman antiquity within modern European intellectual history, the history of political thought and political philosophy, as well as broader fields including ancient Greek philosophy, the Platonic tradition, Cypriot studies and the history of literature.
Professor Demetriou is among the scholars who have contributed to the establishment of Classical Reception Studies as an independent field of research. His work has highlighted the History of Ideas as a distinct methodological approach to the study of the reception of antiquity and has demonstrated its importance for understanding the appropriation and transformation of classical literature within modern European intellectual history.
He has published monographs, edited volumes and articles in international scholarly journals, and his work has received wide international recognition.
Professor Demetriou is Series Editor of Brill’s Companions to Classical Reception and Brill’s Companions to Classical Philosophy (De Gruyter Brill), and serves on the editorial boards of international academic journals. He has edited more than forty collective volumes in the fields of classical reception, the history of philosophy and the history of ideas. From 2003 to 2020, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the international scholarly journal Polis: The Journal for Ancient Greek and Roman Political Thought.
In Greek-language scholarship, he has also published studies on political philosophy, the history of ideas and the history of Cyprus. His publications include Επί Ανάσσης Βικτωρίας: Βικτωριανά κείμενα για την Κύπρο (Under Queen Victoria: Victorian Texts on Cyprus), Ο Πλατωνικός Μύθος (The Platonic Myth), Νεότερη Πολιτική Φιλοσοφία: Από τον Μακιαβέλλι στον Ρουσσώ (Modern Political Philosophy: From Machiavelli to Rousseau), and Η Κρυφή Ζωή των Φιλοσόφων (The Hidden Life of Philosophers).
Alongside his academic work, Professor Demetriou has published literary works, primarily novellas and short-story collections. His entire body of work is shaped by the History of Ideas as a common interpretative horizon, organically connecting philosophical inquiry with literary creativity.
