Marios Ioannou Elia is a composer, academic, and director of artistic and cultural institutions whose work approaches music as an interdisciplinary field, extending into space, visual arts, technology, and collective human experience.
He studied at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, graduating with distinction in three disciplines, while also pursuing studies at the Basel Music Academy and subsequently at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In 2002, he received the Special Award (scholarship) of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture as the “best student” of the university, as well as the Rector’s Excellence Scholarship of the Mozarteum University for his “outstanding artistic and academic achievements”. In 2010, he was awarded his doctoral degree.
His catalogue comprises approximately one hundred compositions, including symphonies, oratorios, operas and multimedia productions. His work brings together diverse musical traditions within an international artistic framework.
A central dimension of his creative practice is the concept of “multimediality” (Schott, 2017), according to which sound, moving image, architecture, movement and technological processes form an integrated compositional system. Within this context, he has developed innovative forms such as the “film concert”, in which auditory and visual perception are interwoven into a unified artistic experience.
His works have been performed by leading international orchestras and institutions, including the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR), the European Union Youth Orchestra, the National Orchestra of China, as well as state opera houses such as those of Stuttgart and Hannover. They have been presented in major venues including the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Vienna, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Kyoto Concert Hall, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Roman Agora of Athens, as well as in prominent cultural centres across Europe, America and Asia.
Among his landmark works, “Autosymphonic” — a symphony for 80 automobiles, orchestra, choirs and electronic media — was presented before an audience of 20,000 spectators and broadcast to more than 55 million viewers worldwide. It was described by German media as the “event of the century” and received the Golden Apple Award for the best cultural event in Germany in 2011. His ongoing series of works “Sound of”, with projects in Vladivostok, Kyoto and Shanghai, reflects his long-term vision of the “musicalisation of the earth”, transforming specific geographical and cultural environments into large-scale artistic narratives.
His work has received international media attention from organisations such as Deutsche Welle, Euronews, The New York Times and CNN, which described him as “the child prodigy of contemporary music”.
Elia has received more than fifty international awards and distinctions, including the First Prize “Luciano Berio” in New York, the First Prize “Edison Denisov” in Moscow, the First Prizes “Lutosławski” and “Sikorski” in Warsaw, and the Theodor Körner Award in Vienna, accompanied by an honorary recognition from the President of Austria. In 2022, the Academy of Athens awarded him Greece’s highest musical distinction. In 2024, he received the Aristeion and the Gold Medal of the Republic of Cyprus, following a unanimous decision of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts, awarded by the President of the Republic. In 2026, the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus awarded him the Silver Medal, the highest distinction of the institution.
He has held major leadership positions, including Artistic Director of Pafos 2017 – European Capital of Culture. Since 2018, he has chaired the Evaluation Committee of the Class of Arts of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and in 2025 he was elected Vice Dean of the same Class.
He maintains an active international academic presence. He has supervised doctoral research at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels and has taught at institutions including the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig, Hong Kong Baptist University, the Kyoto City University of Arts, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He has also chaired international committees, including the 2024 International Music Olympiad.
In 2025, he was elected Ordinary Member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts, holding the Chair of Music Composition.
