Η Κυπριακή Ακαδημία Επιστημών, Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών συμμετείχε στην υψηλού επιπέδου επιστημονικο-πολιτική εκδήλωση «Towards the European Fifth Freedom and Global Competition: Voices from Science», η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 29 Ιουνίου 2026 στις Βρυξέλλες, με τη συνδιοργάνωση του European Research Council και της Γερμανικής Εθνικής Ακαδημίας Επιστημών Leopoldina.
Η Ακαδημία εκπροσωπήθηκε από Πρόεδρο της Τάξης Θετικών Επιστημών (Α΄ Τάξη), Ακαδημαϊκό Σωτήρη Καλογήρου ο οποίος συμμετείχε ως ομιλητής στο πάνελ «Towards an Impactful and Attractive FP10». Στην εκδήλωση παρευρέθηκε και η Προϊσταμένη της Ακαδημίας, κα Λίνα Τσούμπανου.
Ως αποτέλεσμα της διάσκεψης, δημοσιοποιήθηκε το κοινό κείμενο συμπερασμάτων Brussels Messages: Europe can only deliver on its ambitions with research and innovation, το οποίο συνδιαμορφώθηκε από τις συμμετέχουσες ακαδημίες και επιστημονικούς οργανισμούς, μεταξύ των οποίων και η Κυπριακή Ακαδημία Επιστημών, Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών.
Το κείμενο απευθύνει δέκα βασικά μηνύματα προς τα ευρωπαϊκά θεσμικά όργανα και τα κράτη μέλη, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι η έρευνα και η καινοτομία αποτελούν στρατηγικό πυλώνα για την ανταγωνιστικότητα, την ασφάλεια, την ευημερία και τη στρατηγική αυτονομία της Ευρώπης. Παράλληλα, τονίζει την ανάγκη για ένα ισχυρό και αυτόνομο FP10, τη διατήρηση της αριστείας και της ανεξαρτησίας του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου Έρευνας (ERC), την υλοποίηση της Ευρωπαϊκής «Πέμπτης Ελευθερίας» με την ελεύθερη κυκλοφορία γνώσης και ταλέντου, την απλούστευση των διαδικασιών χρηματοδότησης, την ενίσχυση του Ευρωπαϊκού Χώρου Έρευνας και την προώθηση της διεθνούς επιστημονικής συνεργασίας.

Brussels Messages Conclusions on the Future of European Research and Innovation
The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts participated in the high-level science-policy event “Towards the European Fifth Freedom and Global Competition: Voices from Science”, held in Brussels on 29 June 2026 and jointly organised by the European Research Council (ERC) and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
The Academy was represented by Academician Sotiris Kalogirou, President of the Academy’s Class of Natural Sciences (Class A), who participated as a speaker in the panel discussion “Towards an Impactful and Attractive FP10.” The Academy’s Head of Administration, Ms Lina Tsoumpanou, also attended the event.
As a key outcome of the conference, the joint conclusions document, Brussels Messages: Europe Can Only Deliver on Its Ambitions with Research and Innovation, was published. The document was jointly developed by the participating academies and scientific organisations, including the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.
The Brussels Messages present ten key recommendations addressed to the European institutions and the Member States, highlighting that research and innovation are fundamental pillars of Europe’s competitiveness, security, prosperity and strategic autonomy. The document also calls for a strong and autonomous FP10, the preservation of the excellence and independence of the European Research Council (ERC), the implementation of the European “Fifth Freedom” through the free movement of knowledge and talent, the simplification of research funding procedures, the strengthening of the European Research Area, and the promotion of international scientific cooperation.
