
Andreas Demetriou is a cognitive developmental psychologist. He is Emeritus Professor at the University of Nicosia and a Member of the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europaea), the International Academy of Education and the Association for Psychological Science. He is Honorary Doctor of Middlesex University and Honorary Professor of the Universities of Durham in the United Kingdom and Northeastern in China. He served as Professor of Psychology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1975–1996), the University of Cyprus (1996–2008) and the University of Nicosia (2011–2016). He held leading academic, administrative and political positions (Vice-Rector and Acting Rector of the University of Cyprus, 1999–2002; Founding President of the Cyprus University of Technology, 2004–2008; President of the Council of Rectors of the Universities of Cyprus, 2006–2008; and Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus, 2008–2011). He served as Editor, Associate Editor or member of the Editorial Board of important journals such as Psychology, Developmental Science, Learning and Instruction, Intelligence and Journal of Intelligence.
He has developed a theory of cognitive development that synthesizes the developmental, psychometric and cognitive approaches to the study of intelligence. His work has been published in more than 200 books and articles, the latest being the book Growing Minds: A Developmental Theory of Intelligence, Brain, and Education (Routledge, 2018), which synthesizes his research of the last 35 years on the development of intelligence, personality and the brain and proposes applications in education. The journals New Ideas in Psychology (1998), Developmental Science (1999), Developmental Review (1999), Educational Psychology Review (2011), Intelligence (2013), Human Development (2018) and Journal of Intelligence (2018) devoted special issues to the discussion of this work. Recently, the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science (2019) included him in a special issue dedicated to psychologists whose work has influenced the real world. His students are today Professors at many universities in Greece, Cyprus and other countries in Europe, China and Africa.
